Richard Wright was always in the shadows within the massive machinery of Pink Floyd.
He was the master of the harmonies that carried the soul of the albums, the keyboard textures like a vast water surface, but he was always at the back of the stage.
By 1978, two major conflicts erupted in his life simultaneously:
his diminishing influence within the band and the harsh collapse of his marriage. Wet Dream was born right in the midst of this — an escape, an introspection, and an attempt to build a world of his own.
Long separations during Pink Floyd tours, a lack of communication, and Wright's increasing introversion were pushing his marriage to the breaking point.
Though not much discussed in the press, according to his friends, the studio was almost his only escape from the tension at home during that period. The album's pastoral, calm, almost "breathing" feel exists partly for this reason: Wright had built a sanctuary for himself.
This period was also contentious within Floyd. As Waters' control intensified, Wright increasingly felt like an "extra." Wet Dream is essentially Wright's move to reclaim both personal and musical freedom.
How's the music?
Wet Dream recalls Wright's role in Pink Floyd but doesn't directly copy it. The album is warmer, smaller, more personal. The keyboard layers are like a water surface; the guitar and saxophone move like gentle waves. There's no "solo album ostentation" — quite the opposite, Wright acts here as a composer of calm.
Snowy White's touch: the color of the album
The biggest surprise on the album is the guitars of Snowy White, who also played on Pink Floyd's 1977–1981 tours. Snowy's tone is very different from David Gilmour's dramatic crescendos; it's softer, more blues-infused, a more breathable style. This is why the mood of Wet Dream naturally takes shape: the internal atmosphere of a Floyd album + the tranquility of a boat trip in the Mediterranean. "Cat Cruise" and "Mediterranean C" are the best examples of this combination.
