The Tropical Diaspora project is a special series run by Berlin-based Tropical Diaspora Records, which both archives and reinterprets the diaspora culture of Latin American and African origin with a contemporary sound. Behind the label are two figures, DJ Dr. Sócrates and DJ GArRinchA, who have been bringing Afro-Latin music to Berlin clubs for years. For them, this series is not just a music release; it's a way of recording the connection that communities scattered across different parts of the world have with rhythm.
For this very reason, Tropical Diaspora #1, one of the strongest links in the series, flows not like a compilation, but like a cultural story: Afrobeat, cumbia, rumba, salsa, Latin soul, and Caribbean folklore—each heard with an identity carried into modern city life without losing its roots. This is always the way with diaspora music: it is both far from home and carries the feeling of returning home.
